Govardhan Eco Farm

Off-Grid, Community-Led, Sustainable Design in the Wye Valley

Nestled in the hills of the Wye Valley, high above Symonds Yat, Govardhan Eco Farm is a 3-acre organic demonstration site where sustainable design, ecological farming, and community learning come together.

After three years of development, the farm now features:

  • A no-dig growing area

  • An outdoor kitchen and covered workshop space

  • A tool store and conservation hub

  • A wildlife pond and small waterfall supporting biodiversity

  • Wildflower meadows and ecological planting zones

With no mains water or electricity, the site operates entirely off-grid as a working example of low-impact systems — including rainwater harvesting, solar power, and a gravity-fed water supply.
Our dry sanitation and HH-2 composting systems demonstrate how organic waste can be rapidly transformed into fertile soil, helping visitors learn practical methods for regenerative land management.

Govardhan Eco Farm runs seasonally, hosting workshops, ecology projects, and volunteer sessions through the spring and summer months.
During winter, the team collaborates with other sustainable farms and community projects, sharing knowledge and developing new skills to bring back each spring.

We also run a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group, meeting regularly to grow, harvest, and share produce. If you’d like to get involved, please send email here

Why “Govardhan”?

The name Govardhan has many layers of meaning. One translation is “hill of cow dung”, reflecting the traditional use of cow dung as a powerful natural fertiliser that nourishes crops and sustains life without chemicals or pesticides. The word Vardhana means nourishment — together symbolising the abundance and harmony that comes from working with nature.

Support & Community

Govardhan Eco Farm is proud to be supported by Good Gardeners International, a registered charity that secured funding from the National Lottery Community Fund. These grants have helped us grow our facilities, create opportunities for local people, and provide employment for skilled and unskilled workers who share our vision of a sustainable community farm.

CSA & Volunteering

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
Our CSA group shares the work and rewards of growing food together. Members meet regularly to sow, weed, and harvest, and in return receive a share of fresh, seasonal produce from the farm. It’s a way of building community while learning hands-on skills in organic growing.

How to join the CSA

  1. Send us an email to express interest

  2. Come along to an introduction day

  3. Join in with growing and harvesting days

Volunteering at the Farm
We welcome volunteers who want to get practical experience with no-dig gardening, composting, pond building, wildlife planting, and off-grid systems. No previous experience is needed — just enthusiasm, sturdy shoes, and a willingness to learn.

Volunteering days are small and friendly, with space for 5–10 people, so everyone gets a chance to be involved.
